CT Hops for Hope Spotlight 18
Counter Weight Brewing, Hamden
I had the pleasure this morning of appearing on First Thing Fairfield County to help promote CT Hops for Hope. (Thanks Ken!) I was all done by 10:30 AM and headed back north. No breweries are open in the morning, but as I passed the exit for Counter Weight in Hamden, I felt visceral pain. Here I was! Just minutes away! And I’m friends with the owner! I can text him for Christ’s sake! But it’s 10:30 in the morning and that wouldn’t be cool… so I continued north. Such is the allure of the big, new(ish), beautiful baby of former NEBCO owner/brewer Matt Westfall. And now I’m sitting here kicking myself, knowing I could maybe have some fresh Counter Weight beer chilling in the fridge. Grrrr…

I can’t front. Yes, I’m friends with Matt. But then again, everyone who meets Matt is a friend of Matt. I’m not friends with Matt because he’s one of the most skillful brewers in the region, I’m friends with him because he’s an excellent human being. When we put together a smaller Hops for Hope event in April, Matt literally GAVE us Counter Weight for a day and invited 20 breweries to pour in his space. He was the first brewery to sign up to pour at our signature 100% charitable fest on September 2nd in New Britain. He is creating a special cask for our VIP’s. So, yeah, I love Counter Weight. And so does everyone else, no matter your connection with the owner. Two levels, an impressive breadth of beer styles on tap, incredible guest taps, cool music, game tables… I still can’t believe I didn’t try to stop in this morning!
Look, I’ll understand if you think I’m just blowing smoke about Counter Weight because I’m cool with the owner. And I apologize for gushing here. I invite you to ask literally anyone – any brewer, any drinker – what they think about Matt and/or Counter Weight. Go ahead. Do it. You see? No one said anything remotely negative, right? I know! It’s almost crazy! And if you don’t care about who is making your beer, have all the Counter Weight you can find. From the grissette to a DIPA, from the outmeal stout to the saison, you can’t find much better… anywhere. We are extremely excited and proud to have Counter Weight play such a prominent role again for a Hops for Hope event. You won’t want to miss this!
