Hunting for Trails
Durham Meadows WMA, Durham
September 2023
When I put together my CTMQ Town Guides for each of our 169 towns, I do my best to capture everything germane to what it is I do. When it comes to hiking, I tend to be way too thorough. There’s a sort of hierarchy to these things, and state-owned wildlife management areas usually fall towards the bottom of it.
The large majority of the WMAs are not managed for hiking, but do usually have some dirt roads or hunting paths. Some WMAs provide for enjoyable strolls (outside of hunting seasons or on Sundays but people, still, wearing blaze orange is always a good idea.)
Some WMAs do not provide enjoyable hiking experiences. Such is the case at Durham Meadows. The property borders the back of the Durham Fair fairgrounds and the town owned Frederick White Farm – which does have more hikeable paths.
I parked, hopped out, took the picture of the sign, and walked about 20 feet in two different directions. It was not worth it. I’m not hunting, so there was no point for me to trudge through muddy and swampy thick undergrowth for a couple miles for no reason.
But hey, now we know. Skip this as a pure hiking area.
